Voting: The Student Impact On Campus

Voting: It Makes A Difference

Campus is plastered in posters and banners, candidates are sharing their platforms during forums, and The Gateway is getting ready for their annual poster slam. Elections are underway, and campus is abuzz. But why should you care? The majority of you aren’t friends with any of the candidates, and aren't involved in student governance… so why vote, right?

Well, here's the impact that you (and those students who have come before you) have had on our campus:

As you can see, our student leaders and referendums can have more impact on you than you might think. There are no referendums or plebiscites appearing on the ballot this year, but the leaders we select will have a crucial role in creating change. Think about what matters most to you, educate yourself on the candidates’ platforms, and most importantly, get out and vote this year!

About the Author

My name is Erin and I’m going into my eighth, and final, year at the University of Alberta. When I grow up, I want to be a fairy princess… but since the U of A doesn’t offer that program, I am working on completing my Bachelor of Elementary Education.

I can usually be found consuming excessive amounts of caffeine in the library, volunteering with my sorority sisters, or hitting up the latest campus events.

What I love most about the U of A is how different the experience is for everyone, and how many experiences each student can have. I hope to share my stories and yours, so that together we can discover what this amazing campus has to offer!
