Fall Fashion Guide: Green and Gold Trends

You might have noticed the leaves on our campus have begun to change from a vibrant summer green to a rich autumn gold… it makes our campus look very “U of A”, don’t you think? As September begins to draw to a close, it’s time to start breaking out the sweaters and long pants. So, why not show off your green and gold pride by adding a twist of U of A apparel into your fall wardrobe? Take a look at how some of my friends did it:

Stacey wears a comfy and cozy U of A sweatshirt to show off her school pride…and keep warm in the brisk September air! You can purchase University of Alberta logo apparel from The Bookstore in the Students’ Union Building.

Christine mixed and matched clothes she already owned to create her green and gold look. If you search deep into your closet, you might be surprised with what great looks you will find!

Erin is representing her sorority in a green and gold t-shirt. Think about selecting our school’s colors when doing clothing orders for your student groups!

Devon and Derek wear t-shirts they picked up at President’s Address and Break the Record. Green and Gold Day is a great time to wear those t-shirts you’ve collected from U of A events!
Sarah is going for an old-school collegiate look this Green and Gold Day in her U of A cardigan! Sometimes you can come across a great vintage-inspired find at the Bookstore… but if you know any University of Alberta alumni, they might have a real vintage item you can wear for Green and Gold Day!

Everett accessorizes his look with a University of Alberta backpack. Even if you don’t own any Green and Gold clothing, you can show your school pride with a bag, scarf, or even jewellery  Any touch of green and gold will show your school spirit!

And if you’re looking for a place to try out your on-trend fashions, be sure to participate in this year’s Green and Gold Day on Friday (September 27)! At noon everyone is invited to join together in QUAD for the ultimate green and gold photo shoot. To help prepare you for the big day, The Bookstore will be celebrating all week long with special sales – so make sure you go stock up on green and gold gear before Friday! (It’s also a great time to get some holiday shopping out of the way!)

Which Green and Gold outfits do you like? How will you show your school spirit on Green and Gold Day?

Did you know that in October of 1908, a woman named Marion Kirby Alexander came up with the green and gold color palette that we still use today? According to the University of Alberta Calendar, "The green represents wide stretches of prairie land flanked by deep spruce forests, and is symbolic of hope and optimism; the gold represents the golden harvest fields and is symbolic of the light of knowledge." I think it's pretty cool to get to know what the colors we see around campus stand for!

About the Author

My name is Erin and I’m going into my eighth, and final, year at the University of Alberta. When I grow up, I want to be a fairy princess… but since the U of A doesn’t offer that program, I am working on completing my Bachelor of Elementary Education.

I can usually be found consuming excessive amounts of caffeine in the library, volunteering with my sorority sisters, or hitting up the latest campus events.

What I love most about the U of A is how different the experience is for everyone, and how many experiences each student can have. I hope to share my stories and yours, so that together we can discover what this amazing campus has to offer!
